Positioned at the start of a highly unpredictable innovation pipeline, they secure just a minor portion of the total value produced. Technology transfer sustains comprehensive innovation networks—including new ventures, incubators, investment funds, and research hubs—that cluster around leading research universities and draw substantial private investment. In the previous year, research parks linked to universities yielded approximately $33 billion in federal tax income—significantly exceeding the royalties universities obtain from patent licensing.
